Leonid Hrabovsky was born in Kiev in 1935. After graduating from Kiev University in 1956 with degree in
economics, entered the Kiev Conservatory, where he studied composition
with Lev Revutsky and Boris Liatoshinsky.
He graduated in 1959, received a graduate diploma in 1962, and after 1966
taught theory and composition there. He moved to Moscow in 1981.
In the 1960s, along with a small group of Ukrainian composers, he
experimented widely with modern techniques and
styles, becomong a pioneer of the Soviet avant garde.
He later sought a complex stylistic synthesis in his music.
In 1989 Hrabovsky moved to the United States. He now resides in New York,
where he holds a position of a composer-in-residence of the Ukrainian
Institute of America. His compositions include
a large body of symphonic, instrumental and vocal music, as well as music for
theater and cinematograph.
